This section of the tutorial took a little longer to put together.  Bryce 5's terrain editor is a vast improvement over Bryce 4.  The larger preview sizes makes it much easier to see what is happening.  I resampled the images for this section down to 800 x 600 and then cropped where necessary.  So, some of the detail in the previews was lost.  My screen is 1024 x 768. However, it won't take you long to get the feel of how much of this or that does what.  Let's get going. :)

1.  Setup

Set up your previews and screen as below.  Just a suggestion.  If you are used to a particular setup, by all means continue with it.

2.  Click on new as shown above.  Then click on Blob Maker as indicated below.

3.  Set your brush settings so.

4.  Adjust the raise / lower control until you see approximately what I have below.

5.  ****** HIT CTRL Z ******  It will go back to what it was.

6.  Click on the little icon in the top right of the Terrain Canvas window to enable the menus shown at the bottom of the window.  Under brush behavior, click on the little down dart and select Paint Effect.

7.  Now we get into subjective stuff.  I just painted squiggly lines as shown below.  Do what ever turns you on.  If I wanted a better mountain, I wouldn't have made it so symmetrical.  But for ease of explanation, I chose this.

8.  Now go cross grain and break up the ridges while watching what happens in the Preview window.

9.  Switch to Elevation, shown in the lower part of the window below.  Hold down the space bar and left click at the left of the terrain close to black but not entirely.

10.  Adjust your brush size to approximately the size shown below.  Remember this is smaller than your actual Terrain Canvas window.

11.  We are going to paint in Fast Slope.  Set your paint amount as shown in the brush control window on the left.  Along the ridges, paint as shown below.  If you plan to use the back of the mountain, paint them too.

12.  After you are done painting Fast Slope, adjust your brush size.

13.  Paint a band around the out side of the mountain.  Paint over areas that may be too bright.  You want to leave a little elevation so that it is not perfectly even.

14.  Click on the grid in the brush settings tool and select 1024 - massive resolution.

15.  Add a little touch of erosion by moving the mouse to the left after clicking and holding on the Erosion control.  This will cut down into your terrain rather than raising it.  Add just enough until you can barely see it.  Look in grey areas for the indication.

16.  Adjust your brush as shown in the Terrain Canvas window.  Make it black by sliding the elevation control all the way down.  Go around the perimeter of the mountain edge making it uneven.

17. Note!  You may want to SAVE here just in case you don't like your result. Also, you may want to adjust Raise/Lower to lower the top of the mountain so that you can put trees there too.  Just a little is needed.  Left click and hold on Spikes.  Move the mouse to the right until you can just see the spikes come up.  Not too much now. :)

18.  **********Hit CTRL Z *************  And then select Paint Effect as shown below.

19.  Adjust your brush as shown below.  Paint along the ridge lines and flat areas.  Stay away from your Fast Slope areas.  This will take some experimentation until you are satisfied.  It is best to save your mountain and then apply the spikes as described in 17 and 18.

Ok, I realize that you put all this work into this mountain and don't have a material for it.  Just be warned that you may have to adjust the material for your mountain.  What and how to do that  is coming.  See the image above for what you can do with this material.  And, oh yeah, I modeled that boat.  After all of this is done, I may post it for download.
